Poppy Moon and the Law
People ask if the legal situation set out in The Trial of Poppy Moon is true. And I have to say that it is.
If someone steals your car and the police find it, you can have it back. However, if someone steals your body organs then, even if you find them, the law is very clear – you cannot have them back.
The reason is this. The law states that the remedy to a case cannot cause more harm than the original grievance. In other words, for Poppy to have her kidney back, the French boy would have to undergo further surgery, which is never totally risk free. The problem facing Marcus Coaker, Poppy’s lawyer, is that, because of her dire medical condition, no kidney other than her own would be of any use to her.
